Knee Arthritis: Relief Options Beyond Pain Pills and Replacement

If your knees ache on the stairs, stiffen up after sitting, or swell after a long day, you are not stuck choosing between a bottle of pain pills and a major operation. Knee arthritis treatment is a stepwise menu, and most people get meaningful relief from the smarter, lower-risk options long before surgery enters the conversation. At Journey Orthopaedic Institute, we are surgeon-led and honest about when a knee replacement is the right call and when it is not.

What Knee Osteoarthritis Actually Is

Osteoarthritis is the gradual wear of the smooth cartilage that caps the ends of your bones. As that cushion thins, bone moves closer to bone, the joint can swell, and you feel pain, stiffness, grinding, and loss of motion. It is common, it is progressive, and it is also very manageable. The goal of good knee arthritis treatment is not to reverse aging, it is to calm the joint, keep you moving, and protect the cartilage you still have.

A proper evaluation matters because not every painful knee is arthritis. Meniscus tears, ligament problems, tendon issues, and referred pain from the hip can all mimic it. We use a focused exam and in-office imaging with our SMART-C mini C-arm to confirm what is actually going on before building a plan.

A Stepwise Menu for Knee Arthritis Treatment

Think of these as layers. Many patients combine several, and we start with the options that carry the least risk.

  • Activity and load management: smart modification, not shutdown. We help you keep the activities you love while easing the ones that flare the joint.

  • Physical therapy: targeted strengthening of the quad, hip, and core to offload the knee. This is one of the highest-value, lowest-risk steps and is often the difference maker.

  • Weight management: even modest weight loss meaningfully reduces the force crossing your knee with every step.

  • Bracing and DME: an offloader or supportive brace can shift pressure off the worn side of the joint and make walking comfortable again.

  • Injections: a range of options, discussed below, to calm inflammation and improve comfort.

Physical Therapy and Strength

Strong muscles act like shock absorbers for an arthritic knee. Our integrated PT is led by Dr. Christie Booth Smith, PT, DPT, KEOMPT, and is built into your care plan rather than outsourced and disconnected. A PT initial evaluation and treatment, 60 minutes, is 235 dollars. Follow-up 60-minute sessions are 195 dollars, and an evaluation plus five sessions is 1,000 dollars.

Injection Options, Including HA and Biologics

When activity changes and therapy are not enough, injections can buy real comfort.

  • Hyaluronic acid (HA): a lubricating and cushioning injection some patients use to quiet a chronically achy knee.

  • Orthobiologics (PRP, BMAC, Lipogems): treatments that use your own platelets or tissue with the goal of reducing inflammation and supporting the joint.

Because HA and biologics are individualized, there is no public price for them. Ask whether you are a candidate and request a Good Faith Estimate so you know your cost before anything is scheduled.

StemWave Shockwave Therapy

StemWave is a noninvasive shockwave option for certain stubborn pain patterns around the knee. A StemWave consultation is 50 dollars, and a standalone StemWave treatment is 200 dollars.

Where Knee Replacement Fits

A knee replacement is an excellent operation for the right person at the right time. That time is usually when pain is constant, function is genuinely limited, imaging shows advanced arthritis, and you have given the smart non-surgical options a fair trial without enough relief. Replacement is a true reset, but it is also major surgery with real recovery. We will tell you plainly when you are there, and just as plainly when you are not. Our job is to help you exhaust the reasonable lower-risk steps first, then move forward decisively if surgery is the answer.
